What do oak trees and wine have in common?

Quercus Subern, the cork oak in all it’s glory!

What do oak trees and wine have in common? A lot it turns out.

The Cork oak tree traditionally was “farmed” and to this day continues to provide corks for the wine industry.  A medium-sized evergreen oak that is native to the central and western Mediterranean region also grows well here in Ojai. The bark from this oak is commercially harvested as seen below and then processed to produce products including wine bottle corks, flooring, soundproofing , and yoga blocks!.

Over time, the bark will grow up to 12” thick.

You can find two fine examples of this tree on the right side of Highway 150 just past the back gate to Rancho Matillaia.

We plant cork oaks, You want one? We'll plant one for you on March 16.  Order one here.
